Join our hands-on media academy where students learn how to create content, tell stories, interview real people, and produce films that matter.

Students will gain real-world experience both in front of the camera and behind the scenes while developing leadership, communication, and creative skills.

WEEKLY PITCH SESSION

EVERY FRIDAY

Students will participate in a creative pitch meeting where they present ideas for:

  • Short films

  • Community stories

  • Local business spotlights

  • News coverage

  • Documentary projects

  • Social media content

The best ideas will be selected for production.

GUEST SPEAKERS

Students will meet professionals from:

  • Film & Television

  • Journalism

  • Photography

  • Business

  • Marketing

  • Community Leadership

Guest speakers will share their journeys and answer questions about careers in media and entrepreneurship.

SCHEDULE

WEEK 1: INTRODUCE YOURSELF

Students will create a visual story about themselves.

Project: "Who Am I?"

Record interviews and various camera shots that showcase:

  • Your interests

  • Your hobbies

  • Your goals

  • Your personality

  • Your story

Students will learn basic camera operation, framing, and storytelling.

WEEK 2: COVER STORY

Students will be assigned a recreation center activity to cover.

Possible assignments:

  • Basketball

  • Dance

  • Fitness

  • Arts & Crafts

  • Community Programs

Students will learn how to gather footage and tell a story through observation and interviews.

WEEK 3: 60-SECOND TRAILER

Create a one-minute cinematic trailer.

Students will record:

  • B-Roll footage

  • Establishing shots

  • Detail shots

  • Action shots

Voiceover options:

  • Monologue

  • Prayer

  • Spoken word

  • Voicemail

  • Personal reflection

Students will learn pacing, emotion, and visual storytelling.

WEEK 4: BLACK IN 828

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

Students will visit and document a Black-owned business in the community.

Activities include:

  • Interviewing the owner or staff

  • Recording customer interactions

  • Capturing B-Roll footage

  • Highlighting the impact of the business

Students will produce a short feature for the Black in 828 series.

WEEK 5: REMAKE THE SCENE

Students will select a film and recreate three scenes.

Challenge:

  • Reimagine the scenes

  • Add your own creativity

  • Change locations

  • Change dialogue

  • Make the story your own

Students will learn directing, acting, blocking, and shot matching.

WEEK 6: COMMUNITY NEWS

ON THE SCENE REPORTING

Students will identify a newsworthy event happening in the community.

Projects may include:

  • Festivals

  • Sporting events

  • Community meetings

  • Charity events

  • Local celebrations

Students will learn:

  • Reporting

  • Interviewing

  • Stand-ups

  • Green screen production

  • News package editing

WEEK 7: PREMIERE NIGHT

SHOWCASE YOUR WORK

Students will prepare their projects for a public screening.

Family and friends are invited to attend the:

Celebrate:

  • Awards and recognition

Students leave with a portfolio of work and the confidence to continue creating.

MY P.E. KIDS FILM & MEDIA ACADEMY

Where Young Storytellers Find Their Voice.

 

SCHEDULE →

WEEK 1: INTRODUCE YOURSELF

Discover your voice and begin your storytelling journey. Students will create a visual introduction by recording interviews and various camera shots that showcase who they are, their interests, hobbies, goals, and personality. Learn the fundamentals of camera operation, framing, and storytelling while creating your first project.

WEEK 2: COVER STORY

Students will be assigned a recreation center activity to cover as a journalist and filmmaker. Whether it's basketball, dance, fitness, or another community program, students will learn how to observe, capture meaningful moments, conduct interviews, and tell a story through video.

WEEK 3: 60-SECOND TRAILER

Create a cinematic one-minute trailer using B-roll footage and voiceover narration. Students may use a monologue, prayer, voicemail, spoken word piece, or personal reflection to tell a compelling story. Learn pacing, shot selection, audio recording, and emotional storytelling techniques.

WEEK 4: BLACK IN 828

Highlight a local Black-owned business as part of our community storytelling series. Students will interview owners or staff, record B-roll footage, and showcase the impact these businesses have within the community. Learn documentary filmmaking, interviewing, and community journalism.

WEEK 5: REMAKE THE SCENE

Choose a film and recreate three memorable scenes while adding your own creative twist. Students will learn directing, acting, shot composition, blocking, and continuity while discovering how filmmakers bring stories to life.

WEEK 6: COMMUNITY NEWS

Become a field reporter and cover a newsworthy event happening in the community. Students will capture on-the-scene footage, conduct interviews, and use green screen technology in the studio to create a professional news package. Learn journalism, reporting, and broadcast production skills.

WEEK 7: PREMIERE NIGHT

Celebrate your accomplishments with family and friends at the My P.E. Kids Premiere. Students will showcase their completed projects on the big screen, share their creative journeys, and be recognized for their hard work and achievements throughout the academy.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

CONFIDENCE & LEADERSHIP

Develop communication skills, public speaking abilities, leadership qualities, and the confidence to share your ideas with the world.

 

FRONT OF THE CAMERA

Learn acting, hosting, interviewing, reporting, public speaking, and how to present yourself professionally on screen.

 

BEHIND THE SCENES

Learn camera operation, lighting, audio recording, directing, producing, scriptwriting, and editing.

 

CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Students will learn how to:

  • Write

  • Pitch

  • Act

  • Edit

  • Collaborate

  • Lead a production team

FRIDAY PITCH SESSIONS

Every Friday, students will pitch ideas for films, documentaries, community stories, business spotlights, news segments, and social media content. Selected ideas will move into production, giving students real-world experience developing and presenting creative concepts.

GUEST SPEAKERS

Hear from filmmakers, entrepreneurs, journalists, business owners, and community leaders who will share their experiences and career journeys.
